CIS 1 Homework #11: Security and Excel Worksheet

20 Points. Due May 17. Late deadline May 24.

Reading:

Create a worksheet and chart from data on the Web using the skills learned in Excel Chapter 1 in the Office 2007 textbook.

1. Go to the Los Angeles Police Department web site at http://www.lapdonline.org.

2. Click the link for CRIME MAP AND COMPSTAT.

3. Under the Crime Statistics Summaries heading, click the link for Gang Statistics by Month.

4. Look at the Citywide Gang Crime Summary data for the most recent 4 months. For each month, note the number of crimes in any 6 categories of your choice. Be careful to choose categories that appear in all 4 months and that are not zero.

5. Use the information from the LAPD site to create a an Excel worksheet with the following features:

(1 points) Appropriate title in cell A1 and your name on the second title line in cell A2.

(1 point) Column headings for each month

(1 point) The crime categories as row headings.

(2 points) Correct data from the web.

(2 points) Totals for each crime calculated with the SUM function. Give the column an appropriate column heading.

(2 points) Totals for each month calculated with the SUM function. Give the row an appropriate row heading.

(1 point) Merge and center the title over the data.

(1 point) Apply the Title cell style to the titles. If you are using Excel 2003, change the font to 18 point bold and choose a color other than black.

(1 point) Apply a cell style to the column headings. If you are using Excel 2003, change the font color and italicize the headings.

(1 point) Apply the Total cell style to the row containing the sum for each month. If you are using Excel 2003, bold the month total row.

(2 points) Select all of the numbers in the worksheet and click the comma style button. Click the Decrease Decimal button (shows zeros and arrow pointing right) twice to remove the decimal places.

(5 points) Drag to select the row and column headings and data. Do NOT include the totals. Create a column chart following the example in Excel Chapter 1 in the Office 2007 textbook. The crime descriptions are long and it will look better if they appear in the legend. Click the Switch Rows and Columns button. Move the chart under the data and size it to match the data.

Save the worksheet as HW11.xlsx and email it to me.
